As students enter their post-secondary lives and the beginning of their careers, they’re confronted with the need to form functional relationships, confidently share ideas, and stand out in their ability to negotiate and navigate conflicts. SpeakSmart’s Interpersonal Skills program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of both conversational and persuasive communication strategies and best practices. The program distills complex and critical concepts into an understandable and age-friendly practical curriculum.

Course Structure

Part 1: Relationships

  • Importance, applications, and fundamentals of interpersonal skills persuasion are discussed to provide thorough introduction.

  • Students will learn how to empathize with and understand others’ perspectives, beliefs and opinions, enabling them to communicate with tact and intention.

  • Students will learn how to communicate tactfully, set necessary boundaries, and protect their interests in regular conversation and disagreements.

  • Students will learn to identify the source of conflicts and comfortably diffuse them to preserve relationships and minimize fallouts with others.

  • Students will learn to set the parameters for a productive and mutually beneficial (integrative) negotiation. This session involves extensive practice opportunities.

Part 2: Persuasion

  • Students will learn and apply the six principles of persuasion: reciprocity, authority, liking, consensus, scarcity, and consistency.

  • Students will learn to use figurative language and storytelling to strengthen emotional appeal and build connection with others.

  • Students will learn the critical element of Ethos: character and credibility, to cultivate a trustworthy and likeable personal brand to build meaningful connection.

  • Students will learn how to define the terms of, substantiate, and present strong and persuasive logical arguments that literally can’t be challenged.

  • Students learn to identify and avoid fallacies, which are insufficiently logical or irrational arguments.
